Broadband
Broadband is now available to most people within the UK. The main limitations are where a property is too far from the local telephone exchange for the broadband service to operate or where the exchange is an older type that will not support broadband.
Other factors may affect individual people where the telephone line is too low a quality to operate a reliable service.
There are four main types of broadband
- ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line). Uses your existing telephone line. Your telephone service operates normally whilst you are using your broadband service.
- Cable. As ADSL but the service uses a fibre-optic cable. This cable normally provides a television service, and telephone service in addition to the boadband service. It connects your computer to the cable company's network.
- A Satellite service requires a satellite dish. Normally used in remote areas or for specialised services.
- Wireless. The service connects to a broadcasting station. The data requests and the downloaded data are broadcast into the home.
Limitations of broadband
The majority of people have the ADLS broadband service. Data speeds are dependent several factors:
- The service you purchase, generally the more expensive it is then the faster it operates
- The amount of traffic (people using broadband) at any point of time
- The distance you are from the exchange
- The quality of the telephone line between you and the exchange
Internet Suppliers
There are a number of different organisations who supply an Internet service through Broadband using the telephone line) or through cable.
The products offered are different in various ways although the basic idea is to connect you to the Internet and to supply an email service of some form.
